About Hernando
There’s something special about a town with old style charm and new ways of living. In Hernando, the pace is whatever you want it to be: a quick run to the grocery store, post office and library then back at home, all in just a few minutes. Or you might enjoy a leisurely walk down the town’s sidewalks or in one of its numerous parks.
Hernando is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the country, mere miles from Memphis. You can drive a little ways north for the advantages of city life and be back on Mississippi’s front porch with your feet up by suppertime.
And suppertime here is good, whether you like the exotic or you lean toward home cooking. Hernando is close to Tunica with its gaming and entertainment venues, but it has lots of opportunities to get and stay healthy and leaders committed to placing health a high priority.
Hernando has twice received the “Healthiest Hometown” award from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, which recognized official policies of the City and the DeSoto County School District. Hernando is a small town with a big heart with people who have big dreams. Those who want to live in a place where they can be good stewards of the environment will be welcome here where a successful recycling program is in full swing. Green spaces designated for walking and biking invite residents to journey down a path to better health and a happier life. Hernando residents enjoy baseball, fishing, boating, a farmer’s market, smiling faces, helping hands, dancing lessons, football games, marching bands, sidewalk sales and riding trails, front porches, flower beds and picnics in the park. Charitable organizations are in place to not only lend a helping hand, but to shake the outstretched hand of those eager to give of their time and resources.
Come visit and see for yourself. You won’t want to leave.
A Letter From The Mayor
Hernando’s population growth is no accident, but area leaders are on track to keep that growth positive and sustainable. “We aren’t necessarily on a hunt for growth. Our mission is to create a higher quality of life for everybody that lives here,” said Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson.
As we create that high quality of life, people find out about it and move here to join us. People who are looking for a high quality of life are probably the people we want to be our neighbors so it just works great for everybody.”
Hernando’s growth will not cause a loss of quality lifestyle because it’s being managed carefully through adherence to strict city ordinances and good planning. City leaders anticipate growth, prepare for it and consider developers as partners in the community’s growth. Developers know what to expect in terms of ordinances and permits — which can be strict, but they pay off in terms of property values.
Locally-owned small businesses do particularly well in the long-term and while bigger franchises are more than welcome, small business owners will find the business climate here warm and welcoming.
